Biography

Lauris Mīlbrets (b. 1979) is a Latvian visual artist with a Bachelor's and Master's degree from the Art Academy of Latvia. Since 2002, he has exhibited internationally, with works in collections across Latvia, the USA, Canada, Norway, Denmark, and Germany.

His artistic practice has evolved from realism to a unique form of segmented abstraction, where each area of the canvas is painted separately with distinct colors, textures, or patterns. Working primarily in acrylic, he creates dynamic compositions that blur the line between painting and design.

Lauris has lived and worked in Canada and the U.S., drawing inspiration from Hamilton’s industrial roots and New York’s fast-paced, multicultural art scene.

He was awarded the 2025 Adolph & Esther Gottlieb Foundation Grant and has previously received the Latvian Unibank "Professor’s Indulis Zariņš" Award.

Notable milestones include participation in the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition (2014) and a transformative residency at Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris (2017).

He is actively evolving his practice through new series of art works and international projects across Europe and the Americas.
